Take control
of your path.
Own your lane.
Wayne Williams’ journey from the trunk to the truck—and the tax rules that came with it.
From weekend handbag sales in an Atlanta parking lot to the driver’s seat of his own trucking business, Wayne is building a different future. Every move brings opportunity. Every move also brings a new question about money, records, and taxes.
Own Your Lane follows a fictional owner-operator’s journey, pairing a relatable story with plain-language tax education for people building something of their own.

“The same road that looks like a grind from the outside looks like freedom from the driver’s seat.”
A business story.
A clearer tax picture.
You do not have to arrive knowing what a Schedule C is—or why self-employment tax differs from the tax withheld from a paycheck. The book meets Wayne at each stage of his working life and brings the tax conversation into the story.
Follow his transition from side-hustle seller to company driver and owner-operator, then into the decisions that connect business ownership with family life, a home, and retirement planning.

- The transition from W-2 employment to owner-operator income.
- Trucking expenses, equipment, depreciation, and travel records.
- Estimated taxes and planning for income without withholding.
- The relationship between business decisions, family changes, and retirement saving.
The examples are educational and illustrative. They are not a promise of a particular deduction, credit, or tax result.

From the introduction to Own Your Lane
This book follows a man named Wayne Williams, a solo owner-operator based in the Atlanta, Georgia area, who built his way from selling purses out of the trunk of a beat-up Chevy Impala to running his own trucking operation, owning a home, and providing for his family. Wayne is not a tax expert. He is not an accountant. He is a man who worked hard, made transitions, and along the way encountered a tax system that had opinions about every single one of those transitions — whether he was ready for it or not.
